    Isaac Richard's Obituary

    From the Raymond Terrace Examiner 27th March 1921

    One of the earliest settlers of the Hunter River died at his sons residence at East Maitland on Thursday morning last week, in the person of Isaac R Pillidge, father of G.H. Pillidge. The deceased gentleman had attained the age of 87 years and his illness extended over a period of merely a few weeks. Death was mainly due to senile decay. The late Mr. Pillidge was born in Devonshire England, and like many of his countrymen, felt the call of the sea and responded, in early life until 25 being spent on board ship. Arriving in Australia he put in several years in the riverboats trading from Morpeth t o Sydney. The "Collaroy", "Coonanbara" and "Tamar" being boats he piloted up and down the river, for in those days the navigation of the river successfully, was regarded as a fine art. Leaving the boats, he took up farming occupations and first settled at N elsons Plains, occupying portion of the farm now owned by Thomas McDermott. There he remained for several years, most of them wet and unprofitable seasons for farmers in those days. Later he went to Narrowgut above Morpeth, and success rewarded his hard working and diligent attention to his occupation. About twelve years ago he had amassed sufficient to retire on and went to Wallsend to live. His residence continued there up to about ten months ago, when Mrs. Pillidge died. From then to his death he had resided with his son at East Maitland. Mr. Pillidge although 87, carried his faculties up to the last, but was threatened with blindness towards the last few months of his life. To those who knew him intimately, he was a valued friend, one of the old school whose word required no ink to fulfill a contract. His word was his bond and his honesty as bright as the sunshine. Though of a retiring disposition, he was highly regarded for his usefulness towards his neighbours and when he could not assist them he made i t a point of his long life, never to make there path harder. He leaves a family of sons, daughters, grand and great grandchildren. His sins are R. Pillidge of Hinton. George Pillidge of East Maitland. Fred Pillidge of Largs and Charles R Pillidge of Morpeth . His daughters are, Mrs. R. Sharpe, Mrs. H Bryant and Mrs. C Durrant of West Maitland, Mrs. J. Cork of Minmi, Mrs. J. Watson of Morpeth and Miss Pillidge of East Maitland. There are 35 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren surviving him. The funeral t o Morpeth cemetery on Friday was largely attended, interment being made in the Church of England section. \par R.T.E 27th May 1921 \par }
