JOHNSON Charles
Byron Bay Wednesday, Mr. Charles Johnson who died at Byron Bay
recently was born on the Hunter River, near Morpeth, in 1851. He
was the third son of the late Charles Johnson, who landed in
Sydney in 1833 and was a fireman on the first steam boat trading
between Sydney and Morpeth in 1835. The late Mr. Johnson followed
various occupations in his younger days and subsequently adopted
farming in the Hunter River district. In 1878 he married Miss
Margaret Blundell and resided in the Hunter River district until
1888. He then came to the Richmond River with his wife and family
and settled at Knockrow, remaining there for four years. He
selected land at Newrybar in 1895, living there until 1914, when
he retired and went to reside at Byron Bay. He enjoyed good
health up to the time of his death. His widow and the following
sons and daughters survive him. Mrs. J Neville of Murgon QLD.
Mrs. H Wright of Byron Bay NSW. Jack of Bangalow NSW. James of
Byron Bay NSW. Richmond of QLD. Mrs. W GELL of Gosford NSW. and
Mrs. J Henton of Byron Bay NSW. Eight sisters and three brothers
of the late Mr. Johnson predeceased him. The only surviving
brother is Mr. Edward Johnson of Brisbane.
